I’ve not posted for a while as I have been working on a new and exciting project. I’ve decided to write a self help book called ‘How to be happy.’
As is often the case with these things it came to me in a flash. A couple of months ago my Dad looked at me and exclaimed ‘I swear Geoff is the happiest dog I have ever known!’ As it was I’d just come back from a long walk where I had eaten a half rotted rodent so of course I was happy but I didn’t mention that as I didn’t want to burst his bubble. However that comment got me thinking. I am happy, every day, and whilst I can’t claim to be the happiest dog in the world - that honour goes to my friend Alfie though I am fairly sure he is as happy as he is because he is quite simple. He goes to bed every night deliriously ecstatic just because he hasn’t done something stupid like eaten a whole uncooked potato and had a near death experience. Surviving the day does seem to be setting the bar fairly low as a life goal but anyway I digress. He may be simple but he is my friend and I love his odd ways.
So the book. Naturally I spread joy among the people I live with ( it’s a gift ) but now I’ve sat down over many hours, pen clamped to my paw, and outlined how I manage to attain the level of happiness that I do so that I can pass on the joy to people I have never met. There are chapters on the power of touch or why you should always sit on people you love, a chapter on the joy of diversity as I have friends of all sizes, shapes and colours. There are pieces on treating yourself be that through a roll in something foul smelling or a piece of someone’s toast when they are not looking. The book discusses living in the now, being in the room and the advantages of not having opposable thumbs so not being able to use iPhones and computers. There is a chapter about how you should aim to spend more time with people wearing White Stetsons and less with people wearing the black ones ( I’ve been watching a lot of old Westerns during Covid.) This is Dale Carnegie for the modern age and I am sure that the book would have been described by Obama as “a seminal work and a book that will bring wisdom to everyone” if he had read it.
The book will be not for profit and sold at cost as I have a bed, two bowls and people to love and to sit on so I want for nothing ( there is a chapter on understanding when you have enough and being happy with what you have).
Peace and much love
Geoff
